Belonging to Space

Lately, I’ve been noticing something about my stucco pieces.

They seem to settle easily into a room — whether the space is small and intimate, or wide and open. They don’t overwhelm, and they don’t disappear either. They simply belong.

I think part of this comes from the nature of stucco itself.
Unlike flat paint or busy imagery, the material responds to space instead of competing with it. The surface catches light gently. Shadows shift throughout the day. The work changes quietly with its surroundings.

In smaller rooms, the neutral, mineral tones don’t crowd the space.
The texture adds presence without pressure. There’s no strong narrative pushing outward — just a soft invitation to breathe.

In larger rooms, the relief holds its own.
From a distance, light animates the surface. The forms don’t get lost, because the material itself carries weight. It almost feels architectural, like part of the wall rather than something placed on it.

I’ve realized that my work doesn’t rely on size, bold color, or recognizable imagery.
It relies on what I think of as material truth — letting the medium speak honestly, without forcing attention.

Because of that, the pieces adapt to the rooms they live in.
They feel calm in quiet spaces.
They feel grounded in open ones.

Many artworks ask to be noticed.
Mine seem to say something else:

I belong here.

And perhaps that’s what I’ve been finding too — not just a way of working, but a way of being.

空間に馴染むということ

(Belonging to Space)

最近、自分の珪藻土漆喰の作品について
ひとつの気づいたことがあります。

小さく親密な空間でも、
広く開かれた空間でも、
不思議と自然に馴染んでいるように感じるのです。
主張しすぎることもなく、
かといって埋もれてしまうこともなく、
ただそこに 在る ように。

それはきっと、
珪藻土漆喰という素材そのものが持つ性質によるのだと思います。
平面的な絵の具や、情報の多いイメージとは違い、
この素材は空間と競うのではなく、
空間に応答します。

光をやさしく受け止め、
時間とともに影が移ろい、
周囲の環境と静かに呼吸するように
表情を変えていきます。

小さな部屋では、
鉱物のような穏やかな色合いが空間を圧迫せず、
凹凸のある質感が、
緊張を生まない存在感を添えてくれます。
強い物語を押し出すことはなく、
ただ、そっと呼吸を促すような在り方です。

広い空間では、
レリーフの表情が距離に耐え、
離れて見ても、光が表面を生かしてくれます。
形が消えてしまうことはなく、
素材そのものが静かな重みを持ち、
まるで壁の一部のように感じられることもあります。

私の作品は、
大きさや強い色、
分かりやすいモチーフに頼ってはいません。

代わりに大切にしているのは、
素材が本来持っている誠実さ —
無理に注目を集めようとせず、
正直に在ることです。

だからこそ、
作品は置かれた空間に合わせて変化します。
静かな場所では、より穏やかに。
開かれた場所では、より安定して。

多くの作品が
「見てほしい」と語りかけるとしたら、
私の作品は、こう囁いているのかもしれません。

ここに、馴染んでいます。

そしてそれはきっと、
作品だけでなく、
私自身が見つけつつある在り方なのだと思います。
