The Presence of Art, Beyond Perfection

I’ve learned that the most powerful artworks don’t always come from perfect technique. They come from presence — being truly there with the piece, letting it speak, and allowing the relationship between artist and artwork to form naturally. Perfection can sometimes create distance, like a flawless façade that’s hard to approach. Presence, on the other hand, invites people in. It carries the warmth, the story, and the humanity of the creator. And maybe that’s what makes a piece unforgettable — not that it’s perfect, but that it’s alive.

Letting Go of Perfection

Letting Go of Perfection

Stucco is messy. It gets on your hands, your clothes, the floor, and sometimes where you didn’t intend at all. For someone like me, who tends to lean toward perfectionism in art, it’s been strangely healing.

Diatomaceous stucco doesn’t always obey. It dries unevenly, picks up textures I didn’t plan, and forces me to adjust and accept. I’ve started to see that beauty doesn’t always come from control—it can also come from letting go.

In the mess, I’m learning freedom. And maybe even joy.

 A Morning Without A/C

 A Morning Without A/C

Yesterday morning, I realized something kind of amazing—I didn’t need to turn on the air conditioner, even though it’s been record-breakingly hot lately. I was sitting in my room, quietly starting my day, and the space just felt... safe, cool, and still.

I really think it’s the diatomaceous stucco that’s making the difference. Ever since I started covering my art panels with it, I’ve noticed how the environment around me has shifted. The air feels better, the temperature more stable—even in heat like this. It’s not just a material I work with anymore; it’s part of the life of this home. And every time I notice something like this, I feel quietly grateful. It reminds me that healing doesn’t always come in dramatic ways. Sometimes, it’s just the gift of being able to breathe and feel at ease.

When There’s Nothing New Yet

Sometimes, I feel like I should be producing more. Like I need to constantly show that I’m still active, still making, still “moving forward.” But there are also days when nothing new comes, and I’m learning to be okay with that.

Maybe this quietness isn’t a pause but a part of the process. The air is different when I let myself rest. My thoughts become clearer. I remember why I started making art in the first place.

Even Leonardo da Vinci said that when we seem to be doing the least, we might be most active in our creative mind. That gives me comfort — knowing that silence and stillness are not empty, but full of unseen growth.

So today, instead of rushing ahead, I’ll listen. I’ll let the stillness speak.

Stucco and the Air We Breathe

I never thought I’d be the kind of person who talks about building materials — but when your health takes a sudden turn, and the air inside your home becomes something you can’t trust, you begin to see the world differently.

In 2021, our household was hit by a strange and invisible crisis. A new gas water heater from a neighbor’s home released high levels of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into our shared environment. I couldn’t stay in my home. My art studio, which had always been a place of peace, became unusable. And worst of all, our bodies responded — headaches, nausea, brain fog, and a deep sense of unease that wouldn’t go away.

Out of desperation, I started researching. That’s when I came across diatomaceous stucco — a natural material made from fossilized algae, known for its ability to absorb and break down harmful substances in the air. I didn’t have walls to renovate, so I tried something else. I pasted the stucco onto large art panels. Three of them. They were clumsy and experimental — I wasn’t even sure they’d do anything.

But they did.
The headaches lifted.
The heaviness in the air changed.
Even the temperature in our home felt easier to live in.

I later learned that diatomaceous stucco doesn’t just absorb — it actually breaks down organic matter that touches the surface. Things like pollen, coffee stains, and even odors gradually vanish. Some families using it on their walls have reported fewer allergy symptoms, and others have seen their electricity bills drop by nearly 50%, thanks to its ability to regulate moisture and temperature.

And that’s when I realized: this wasn’t just art anymore. This was survival. This was restoration.

Since then, I’ve continued to create with diatomaceous stucco — not just for its texture or appearance, but for the life it brings. It reminds me that creativity can be a healing act. That something ancient and humble can quietly make things better.

I don’t make stucco art to sell a miracle. I make it because it saved me.
