“The Pace of Stucco”

One thing I’ve come to love about working with diatomaceous stucco is that it won’t be rushed.
No matter how much I want to move ahead, it makes me wait — for the texture to set, the air to settle, the surface to dry. And in that waiting, something shifts.

Mixing, troweling, smoothing — it’s quiet work. But somehow, it’s where I feel most like myself. The rhythm of my hands, the soft resistance of the material, the coolness of the air as I work — they all remind me that slowness is not emptiness. It’s presence. It’s healing.

In those long moments, when time doesn’t feel like it’s being spent but held gently, I often notice something: a sense of peace that feels almost woven into the dust and the movement. I think that’s when I feel pieces of myself coming back together — like I was made for this.

「珪藻土のペース」

珪藻土と向き合うようになって、好きになったことのひとつは、急かしてもどうしようもないところです。
どれだけ早く仕上げたくても、乾くまでの時間、空気が落ち着くまでの間、素材の表情が変わるのを待つしかありません。
でも、その「待つ時間」の中で、なにかが静かに変わっていくのを感じます。

混ぜること、塗ること、ならすこと——それはとても静かな作業です。
でもその中で、私はいちばん「自分らしさ」を感じることが多いのです。

手のリズム、素材のやわらかな抵抗、作業中に感じる空気の心地よさ。

それらが、「せわしなさ」を手放すことの大切さを思い出させてくれます。

ゆっくりとした時間は、何もしていない時間ではなく、ただ「そ居る居る」時間。
粉の舞う空気の中、ゆっくりと手を動かしていると、不思議と心が整っていくのを感じます。
ああ、私はこの作業のために生まれてきたのかもしれない——そんなふうに思うことさえあります。

“A Beginning”

 
Hello, and welcome to this little journal space.

My name is Aya Sophie. I’m an artist based in Japan, creating textured, abstract works using natural diatomaceous stucco and pigments. My journey with this material began unexpectedly — not as a creative experiment, but as a response to a real-life health crisis. Over time, it turned into something much deeper: a way to tell stories, hold emotion, and quietly restore the spaces around me.

But art isn’t the only way I express myself. I love working with my hands — knitting, sewing, cooking — things that bring a sense of warmth and rhythm to everyday life. I’m also drawn to soft colors, purple, ocean tones, pale orange and natural textures. Whether I’m shaping a dish or shaping a painting, I find peace in the slow, thoughtful process of creating.

This journal is where I’ll be sharing small reflections — on art, process, beauty, and life.

こんにちは。この小さな日記スペースにお越しいただき、ありがとうございます。

私はアヤ・ソフィーと申します。日本を拠点に活動しているアーティストで、自然素材の珪藻土と顔料を使って、質感のある抽象画を制作しています。

この素材との出会いは、創作の探求からではなく、思いがけない健康上の問題から始まりました。でも気づけば、それは物語や感情を映し出す手段となり、周りの空間をそっと癒してくれるような存在になっていました。

アートだけでなく、私は手仕事全般が好きです。編み物、裁縫、料理…。どれも日々の中で静かなリズムをもたらしてくれる、大切な表現のかたちです。

やわらかい色、紫、海のようなトーン、薄いオレンジ色や自然の質感に惹かれます。料理のレシピを考えるときも、作品を仕上げるときも、ゆっくり丁寧に向き合う時間の中に、安らぎを感じています。

この日記では、アートのこと、制作のこと、美しさや日々のことを、少しずつ綴っていけたらと思っています。
